Benoit to Engage Students in Government during Coachella Valley High School Career Week
THERMAL – Coachella Valley High School seniors will participate in a mock legislative committee hearing chaired by Supervisor John J. Benoit during CVHS Career Week.
Supervisor Benoit’s presentation will be from 8:45 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the high school, located at 83-800 Airport Blvd. Each career presenter has been asked to prepare an interactive activity to involve the students, based on daily career experiences.
Benoit will organize a mock committee hearing on Assembly Bill 669, a bill introduced in the state legislature to tax sweetened beverages to fund anti-obesity and other health programs. The 60 students will be asked to present the merits of their position and persuade their fellow classmates appointed to the committee that will hear the bill.
“I enjoy the opportunity to share career advice with students and encourage them to be aware and involved in government,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “This exercise will test students’ public speaking skills and ability to prepare informed arguments. Using this actual bill as a teaching tool will make this a very real experience for the kids.”
CVHS Career Week runs from Tuesday to Friday and will feature presentations from more than 50 local professionals. CVHS Career Week is an initiative of the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) grant to prepare students for success in college and the workforce.
