Supervisor Benoit to Present Awards at Saturday’s 17th Annual Rotary Math Field Day
INDIO -- Supervisor John J. Benoit will acknowledge the winners of the 17th Annual Rotary Math Field Day Saturday at John Glenn Middle School in Indio (79-655 Miles Ave.). The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
"Valley-wide Math Field Day promotes appreciation and excellence in math among young students," said Supervisor John J. Benoit. "I am extremely pleased to see that the support of service clubs and the business community has allowed this tradition to carry on."
As president of the Indio Rotary Club and then-commander of the California Highway Patrol Indio area, Benoit and his wife, Sheryl, started this local tradition in 1994. Sheryl, a Desert Sands School District employee, proposed the idea to Indio Rotary. School districts in the Coachella Valley had been forced to discontinue participation in a similar event held annually in Riverside due to the cost of transportation.
Approximately 300 students in teams from middle schools across the valley will come together to compete in the mathematical challenge. Rotary and local businesses will provide trophies, place ribbons, and monetary awards to the top mathematicians.
