Inspiring Seniors to be Honored Friday Before Sold-Out Crowd

PALM DESERT – Twelve extraordinary seniors will be honored Friday before a sold-out crowd of more than 550 people at the popular Senior Inspiration Awards lunch, marking the event’s 20th year.

The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert (74-855 Country Club Dr.).

“The Senior Inspiration Awards has become a beloved tradition because each attendee leaves inspired by the accomplishments and optimism of the honorees,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “The Coachella Valley is fortunate to have a senior population that is so active in our community. I am proud to see this tradition continue into its twentieth year.”

The County of Riverside and the Coachella Valley’s nine cities each select a senior citizen 70 of age and older who demonstrates a zest for physical and mental well-being through volunteerism and active engagement in the community. The honor was established by former Supervisor Corky Larson in 1992 as a way to recognize Coachella Valley’s role models.

The 2012 honorees are: Ofelia Salas and Leslie “Les” Surlow (Riverside County), Harry and Judie Stone (Cathedral City), Jesus Mota (Coachella), Rose Hargand (Desert Hot Springs), Phoebe Biscow-Brown (Indian Wells), Ray Halliday (Indio), Ann Kosich (La Quinta), Millie Bird (Palm Desert), Mickey Shepard (Palm Springs) and Roslyn “Roz” Gayler (Rancho Mirage).

“The cities and Riverside County selected such outstanding and deserving seniors,” said Indian Wells Councilman Larry Spicer.

Councilman Spicer chaired the Senior Inspiration Awards committee, consisting of representatives of the nine cities, the Office on Aging, Desert Samaritans and Noel Loughrin from Supervisor Benoit’s office.

“As chair, I want to thank all of our committee members whose dedication and enthusiasm made this event possible,” Spicer said.

Brooke Beare and Patrick Evans of CBS Local 2 will again serve as the masters of ceremonies.
