Benoit to Host Emergency Preparedness Seminar May 16 Free Starter Disaster Kits for First 100 Registered Attendees
INDIO – Supervisor John J. Benoit will present a disaster planning seminar for seniors, in conjunction with the Riverside County Office on Aging, at 8:30 a.m. May 16 at the Workforce Development Center in Indio, 44-199 Monroe St., Rm. 403B. The event will provide older adults with information to assist them in creating a safety and emergency response plan.
“Natural disasters are among the few setbacks to life in the Golden State, but are events that we can prepare for,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “Professionals in public safety and emergency coordination will share disaster preparation measures so you can protect your family.”
“Frail seniors and their caregivers often experience mini disasters on a routine basis while coping with chronic disease and disability,” said Ed Walsh, director of the Riverside County Office on Aging. “While they are prepared to navigate these crisis events, there is a danger that the big picture of natural disaster preparedness is ignored or put on the back burner. It is critical to be prepared for all disasters, big as well as small, and education and awareness are the keys to successful planning.”
The seminar will feature presentations from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Riverside County Fire Department Office of Emergency Services and Office on Aging.
A complimentary starter disaster kit will be provided to the first 100 people who make a reservation, limited to one kit per household. The emergency kits are provided in part by Older Americans Act Title III B funding.
RSVPs are requested by May 10 to Lynette Worrell at the Office on Aging at 951-867-3800 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
