Benoit to be Guest Speaker at Friday’s Veterans Breakfast
RIVERSIDE – Supervisor John J. Benoit will present an update on county initiatives pertaining to veterans at the Riverside County Veterans’ Advisory Committee legislative breakfast at 9 a.m. Friday. Veterans, veterans’ dependents and the general public are invited to attend this no host breakfast at Coco’s Restaurant in Riverside, 1303 University Ave.
“The estimated 127,000 veterans who live in Riverside County contribute toward making our county an outstanding place to live,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “The county has a wide variety of services to improve the quality of life for these veterans and their families and to help returning military personnel transition to civilian life.”
The Board of Supervisors recently approved the Veterans Assistance Labor Offering Resources (the VALOR Act) aimed at creating employment and business ownership opportunities for veterans. The county is evaluating internal programs that promote veteran owned businesses and veteran preferences for county contracting to determine whether to increase the bidding preference for businesses with certified disabled veteran status.
The Board of Supervisors also formally supported 13 federal bills relating to veterans health, safety and benefits.
The pending bills would allow 12 weeks of job-protected leave for disabled veterans needing treatment of service-related injuries (H.R. 3524), require the VA to notify veterans of data breaches of sensitive personal information in 5 to 10 days (H.R. 3730) and streamline state certification and licensing for emergency medical technicians, registered nurses and other professions by considering military training and experience (H.R. 4115).
Reservations for Friday’s breakfast are not required. For questions, please call the Riverside County Department of Veterans’ Services at 951-276-3060.
