Community Leader Rudy Gutierrez to Represent Coachella Valley Environmental Justice Areas

DIAMOND BAR – Eastern Coachella Valley community leader Rodolfo “Rudy” Cruz Gutierrez II began service today as the Coachella Valley’s first representative on the local air district’s Environmental Justice Advisory Group.

“Rudy has a strong record of public service and working with others,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “We are fortunate he will be representing our region to help us fulfill our commitment to improving public health in communities with few resources but heavy air pollution impacts.”

The 30-member Environmental Justice Advisory Group assists the AQMD’s Governing Board in protecting and improving public health in AQMD’s most impacted communities through the reduction and prevention of air pollution. The board works with community members to better inform AQMD about environmental justice issues.

“I accept with pleasure the appointment to serve on the Environmental Justice Advisory Group,” said Rudy Gutierrez. “As a businessman and parent with over a decade of Coachella Valley community involvement, I am honored to represent the Coachella Valley.”

Gutierrez, 35, is a branch manager at Kimco Staffing in Palm Desert, a professional staffing firm. Since 2009, he has served on the City of Coachella Planning Commission and president and founder of the Coachella Youth Sports Association Little League. He serves as a resident steering committee member for Building Health Communities Eastern Coachella Valley, an organization committed to improving public health in the eastern Coachella Valley.

Gutierrez served in the U.S. Navy from 1996 to 2000 as a boiler technician and machinist mate. He resides in Coachella with his wife of 10 years, Sonia, and two sons.

Gutierrez was appointed Jan. 4 by the South Coast Air Quality Management District Governing Board at the recommendation of Supervisor John J. Benoit.

The term of office is 4 years. Gutierrez will be paid $100 per meeting, plus travel costs to attend the meetings in Diamond Bar.
