Expansion of SunLine Bus Service to North Shore Approved
NORTH SHORE – The Riverside County Transportation Commission this morning unanimously approved the expansion of SunLine Transit Agency’s bus service to North Shore, providing a critical transportation link for residents of the Salton Sea community.
By September, residents of North Shore will be able to board SunLine buses to Mecca, Thermal, Coachella and Indio, with the ability to connect to other Coachella Valley locations by bus.
“Establishing weekday bus service in North Shore is a momentous accomplishment for the community,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “Reliable public transportation will definitely improve the lives of people who will use this service to get to medical appointments, work, school and other business in the Coachella Valley.”
Supervisor Benoit, SunLine officials and community members will announce this new service at a press conference today at 4 p.m. at the North Shore Beach & Yacht Club Community Center, 99-155 Sea View Dr.
“After spending a significant amount of time meeting with the North Shore community members to understand their needs and develop the project proposal, SunLine is excited to move forward in providing the service,” said C. Mikel Oglesby, general manager of SunLine Transit Agency. “The route is planned to begin in September 2013.”
The weekday bus service will consist of five round-trips between 5:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. The service will be funded over two years with $217,000 from a federal Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) grant matched by local transit funding, plus passenger fares.
