Ceremony for Fred Waring Drive Widening Set for Monday
BERMUDA DUNES – The Riverside County Transportation Department, in coordination with the city of La Quinta, will soon embark on improvements to Fred Waring Drive that will make the major arterial road six lanes from Palm Desert to Indio.
Supervisor John J. Benoit invites the public to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for this project at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9.
The event will take place at 79-200 Fred Waring Dr. in Bermuda Dunes, in the dirt lot at the northwest corner of Fred Waring Drive and Chapelton Drive. Parking will be available on Chapelton Drive and along the northside shoulder of Fred Waring Drive.
“This project widens the final stretch of Fred Waring that doesn’t already have three lanes in each direction,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “While the roadwork will slow down drivers for the next 7 months, once it is completed, it will mark a major improvement to traffic flow through the Coachella Valley.”
The project will widen a 0.65-mile segment of Fred Waring Drive from four lanes to six lanes, between Adams Street and Port Maria Road in the Bermuda Dunes and La Quinta area.
In addition to widening the roadway, the project will modify the road grade, replace the asphalt concrete pavement and overlay with rubberized asphalt, install a sound wall along the south side of Fred Waring Drive and construct a parking lane on the north side of Fred Waring Drive to allow for safe ingress/egress from the residential homes.
Construction of the approximately $11 million project is anticipated to begin after the holidays and be completed by June 2014.
During construction, drivers will be able to use at least one lane in each direction of Fred Waring Drive. There are no planned full road closures.
