Youth in Government Day to Group County Mentors with Students

INDIO – High school students from the Coachella Valley will shadow Supervisor John J. Benoit, Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder Larry Ward and about 35-40 county employees who are based in the Coachella Valley during Thursday’s 11th Annual Fourth District Youth in Government Day.

Supervisor Benoit will make opening remarks at 8:30 a.m. as the students meet their mentors at the Taj Mahal building at the Riverside County Fairgrounds in Indio, 46-350 Arabia St. After six hours of job shadowing, the students will regroup at the Taj Mahal building at 3 p.m.

“We have had a huge response from students and mentors who want to be part of this day that gives an opportunity for students in our education system to experience the variety of rewarding career choices available in public service,” said Supervisor John J. Benoit. “I look forward to showing a student how local government impacts our daily life in the Coachella Valley.”

Supervisor Benoit’s schedule includes the formal launch of Text4baby, a mobile health service for expecting and new parents. That event will take place at 10 a.m. at the Indio Family Care Center in Indio, 47-923 Oasis St. Throughout the day, Supervisor Benoit will be in Coachella Valley Association of Governments committee meetings.

Participating county departments include: CAL FIRE, Sheriff’s Department, District Attorney’s Office, Law Offices of the Public Defender, Animal Services, Child Support Services, Economic Development Agency, Environmental Health, Human Resources, Mental Health, Probation, Public Health, Public Social Services and the Transportation & Land Management Agency.

The employees will be grouped with 70 high school students from 11 participating high schools: Desert Christian Academy, Palm Valley School and Amistad, Coachella Valley, Desert Hot Springs, Desert Mirage, La Quinta, Palm Springs, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Shadow Hills high schools.
