New County Building for Social Services in Coachella Breaks Ground Thursday
COACHELLA – A new regional office for the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services in the City of Coachella will begin construction with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 21.
The event will be held at the City of Coachella Veterans Memorial Park at 1500-1598 4th Street, Coachella, behind City Hall.
“This is a very important project for Riverside County and the City of Coachella,” said Supervisor V. Manuel Perez. “This new office will bring closer access to services and back to work programs and training for residents of disadvantaged communities in the eastern Coachella Valley. It will be a prominent enhancement to Coachella’s growing downtown/Sixth Street corridor, supplying a long-term economic impact that will benefit the residents and businesses in the area for decades to come.”
The Department of Public Social Services will lease the approximately 30,000-square-foot facility for the Self-Sufficiency Division. The full-service office will help clients with temporary assistance programs that include CalWORKs, CalFresh (food stamps), Medi-Cal as well as Welfare-to-Work (GAIN) program assistance that facilitate individuals and families to become self-sufficient. The building will also include a call center.
The $10 million office building will be developed on about three acres at the northeast corner of Sixth and Harrison Street. The new building is anticipated to be an opportunity for new and existing businesses and a catalyst for further investment, business growth and infrastructure improvements in the downtown core of Coachella.
“This project develops a critical vacant corner at the gateway to Coachella’s downtown Pueblo Viejo,” said Coachella Mayor Steven Hernandez. “This is a substantial investment into our downtown and helps build momentum in the downtown, which has a significantly renovated Veterans Memorial Park and a state-of-the-art library under construction. I look forward to the construction of this office, which will stimulate further development of our downtown.”
The facility will be constructed under a public-private partnership with Capital Partners Development Company, which will develop the facility and lease it to the county. Capital Partners is one of the state’s leading builders focusing on complex and hi-tech projects.
The new location is expected to start with approximately 70 employees.
Construction is anticipated to be completed by late 2018.
